International law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP is pleased to announce that it has become one of the rare international law firms awarded an associate membership to the Shanghai Bar Association.

The Shanghai Bar Association has extended its associate membership to a further handful of international (non-Chinese) law firms after many years of deliberation. The members of this group are described as “specially invited associate members.”  Dorsey is one of only seven US law firms to have achieved this honor.

In China international law firms are regulated by the Ministry of Justice while domestic Chinese law firms are regulated by the Ministry as well as local bar associations. The opportunity for more international law firms to interact with Chinese lawyers from local firms in their own bar association and to contribute to the development of the legal profession in Shanghai represents a significant step forward. That Dorsey was awarded this membership demonstrates the visibility it has gained amongst Shanghai legal professionals.

Partner Catherine Pan, who co-heads Dorsey’s US-China Business Group, stated: “We are delighted that our reputation and long history of client service and practice achievements in China has been recognized by the Shanghai Bar Association. We are honored to be part of such a development.”

Partner Peter Corne, co-head of Dorsey’s US-China Business Group and head of the Firm’s Shanghai office, added: “Dorsey welcomes the opportunity to assume a greater role in making further contributions to the development of the legal profession in Shanghai.”
