International law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP announced today that it has named Intellectual Property Litigation Partner J. Michael (Mike) Keyes as head of the Firm’s Seattle Office effective January 2, 2018.

Mr. Keyes will replace long-time Seattle Office Head Corporate Partner Randal Jones. “Mike is the perfect person to provide direction for the Seattle office going forward,” noted Mr. Jones. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as Office Head, but look forward to focusing on my role on the Firm’s Management Committee. It’s been an honor and a pleasure leading such a talented group of attorneys and staff in Seattle. I’m excited about where we are headed and I know Mike will do a terrific job in this role.”

Mr. Keyes’s practice is focused primarily on the areas of trademark infringement, copyright infringement, unfair competition and false advertising.  He has litigated matters in federal courts across the United States and also has substantial experience in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the U.S. Trademark Office.  He has extensive experience representing clients in a variety of industries, with a particular focus on apparel, food and agribusiness and technology.  He also has experience in copyright and trademark counseling and prosecution.

“I am very pleased to have Mike as Head of our Seattle office,” noted Dorsey Managing Partner Ken Cutler.  “He is a very talented lawyer who understands the Dorsey culture and its client service mission. I am confident that Mike will provide the leadership we need going forward.”

In addition to his national litigation practice, Mr. Keyes is an award-winning author and proven thought leader on cutting-edge IP issues. In 2017, Mr. Keyes received the prestigious JD Supra Readers’ Choice Award for his writings on the subject of trademark law. The American Bar Association also just published Copyright Litigation Strategies, an 830-page treatise that Mike co-edited and contributed to as an author. He was also appointed to the IPLaw360 editorial advisory board for 2017.

Mr. Keyes is the co-creator and the co-editor of Dorsey’s critically-acclaimed IP Blog, TheTMCA.com, which focuses on legal developments in the world of TradeMarks, Copyrights, and Advertising and was recently named an ABA Top 50 Law blog. He is frequently called upon by members of the media for his insights and perspective on important IP issues of the day. He has recently been quoted by the likes of The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, The National Law Journal, and the New York Business Journal.  He is also co-host of the weekly legal podcast, This Week in Law, which was also named an ABA Top 25 Law podcast.

“I am honored and delighted to be assuming this new leadership role,” said Mr. Keyes.  “I am grateful for the support of our clients and colleagues from around the globe. My colleagues and I look forward to introducing more clients to Dorsey and its tremendous capabilities to serve our clients in Seattle and around the world.”
