Of Counsel: Professional Development
Dorsey is committed to supporting the growth, effectiveness, and long-term success of our lawyers throughout their careers. Our professional development approach is shaped by the needs of our clients and practice areas, and by the changing ways lawyers build expertise, exercise judgment, collaborate with others, and take on new responsibilities over time.
Practice-Focused Development
Dorsey provides hundreds of hours of practice-focused training each year to help lawyers build the core skills required in their specific area of law. These programs reflect the substantive work our lawyers do, the clients they serve, and the evolving demands of modern legal practice. Through this training, attorneys deepen their technical knowledge, strengthen practice-specific capabilities, and stay current on developments affecting their clients and their work.
Career Growth and Professional Skills
Dorsey helps lawyers navigate each stage of their careers with clarity and purpose. The Firm offers milestone programs for new lawyers, senior associates, and newly elevated partners, along with individualized career planning, coaching, mentoring, and development support. These programs and resources help lawyers strengthen the professional skills essential across all practices, including communication, supervision, collaboration, and sound judgment.
Mentoring
Our mentoring programs are tailored to meet attorneys where they are, providing relevant support and guidance every step of the way. Offerings include the Dorsey Advisor Program, our firmwide program for associates and junior partners; the Compass Onboarding Program for lateral associates; and individualized mentoring initiatives within each practice group.
Feedback and Evaluations
Regular, meaningful feedback is key to lawyer development. At least once a year, attorneys receive formal evaluations designed to support continual growth and development. For associates, the evaluation process is grounded in defined competencies that reflect expectations at each experience level. The Firm also provides training and resources to help supervisors deliver feedback that is thoughtful, constructive, and actionable. We recognize all contributions to the Firm when making salary and bonus decisions.
Business Development Training
Dorsey helps lawyers develop the skills and confidence needed to build relationships, understand client needs, and grow their practices. Business development is integrated into career milestone programs so attorneys receive practical guidance as their roles evolve. Targeted offerings, including the Rising Associate Marketing Program for associates and Practice Boomers for newly elevated partners, provide additional support at key career stages.
Enrichment Programs
Dorsey’s enrichment programs reflect the Firm’s commitment to creating and sustaining an environment where lawyers can do their best work and build meaningful careers. Programs focused on wellness, inclusion, belonging, and career satisfaction support the broader professional experience that helps lawyers thrive.
