We will begin accepting 1L applications for the following 2020 Summer Associate Programs in our Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, and Seattle offices on November 18, 2019. Candidate materials will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. The application deadline for these programs is 11:59pm CT on January 20, 2020.   • Colorado Pledge to Diversity Program
    Dorsey will hire a 1L clerk through the Colorado Pledge to Diversity Program. This program is available to diverse first-year students from the University of Colorado Law School, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and the University of Wyoming College of Law. For more information on this opportunity, please visit the Colorado Pledge to Diversity Program website. Application materials will be made available to eligible students through the participating law schools in December.

  • Dorsey & Whitney 1L Diversity Fellowship
    This fellowship will award $10,000 for the 2020-2021 school year to the selected first-year law student with a diverse background. This is the fifteenth year that Dorsey has offered the Diversity Fellowship. In addition, the Diversity Fellowship recipient will also be named a Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) 1L Scholar.
  • 1L Patent Summer Associate
    The Seattle Patent department seeks a 1L student who is interested in doing Patent work and has an undergraduate degree and background in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.

Pro Bono

  • Each summer Dorsey’s summer associates work on challenging and inspiring pro bono projects. 
  • In 2018, 100% of Dorsey’s Summer Associates participated in the pro bono program!
  • Up to 100 hours of pro bono work count towards an attorney’s hours requirement.  
  • In 2018 we provided over 35,000 hours of pro bono legal services to low income individuals and nonprofit organizations.


  • Dorsey U, the Firm’s in house professional development department, facilitates over 600 hours of internal training annually.
  • In their first year at the Firm, new associates at Dorsey attend two New Lawyer Training sessions specifically designed for those new to the Firm or to the legal practice. These sessions bring together new attorneys from across Dorsey’s 19 offices to learn about the Firm as a whole as well as their individual practice areas.
  • Dorsey U programs are taught by our own lawyers and the best outside instructors. We train in our state-of-the-art conference room facilities with technology links to all offices. Programs are digitally recorded, providing a ready archive of just-in-time training.
  • Dorsey & Whitney LLP is an Accredited Continuing Legal Education Provider in New York and California. Eligible programs are also regularly accredited in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, Washington, and certain other states where Dorsey has offices. To supplement Dorsey U CLE Training, we encourage our lawyers to attend and teach at the best external CLE programs, both locally and nationally, through tuition and travel reimbursement.

London Training Contract and Open Evening

Our Training Contract

Dorsey’s London office takes on two trainee solicitors every September. We look for trainees who can really add value to our team, which goes beyond billable hours. Our ideal candidates are academically excellent, proactive, team players, friendly, hardworking and capable of developing long-lasting and fruitful client relationships.

Each trainee will complete four six-month seats in the following practice areas: mergers & acquisitions, capital markets & banking, commercial litigation and real estate & intellectual property.

Trainee solicitors’ salaries are standard for, and increase in line with, the London market.

London Office Open Evening

If you wish to learn more about Dorsey and its training contract you can get an inside view at our upcoming Open Evening. This will consist of a presentation about Dorsey from several partners followed by an informal Q&A session with trainees and associates. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the firm and its training contract in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The Open Evening will be held at 6pm on Thursday 26 March 2020. To apply, please send your CV and answers to the below questions (in a separate document or in the cover email) to LondonOpenDay by Monday 17 February 2020. You will be informed of the outcome of your application in early March 2020.

New Associates

Dorsey hires new associates directly from law school and following judicial clerkships. Most of our new associates are hired through our summer associate program, but we welcome applications from interested third-year law students or judicial clerks. The firm offers year-for-year credit (up to two years) for federal or highest state court clerkships; credit for other clerkships is determined on a case-by-case basis.
