International law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP announced today that the United States Supreme Court has today issued a unanimous ruling in favor of its client, National Meat Association, in the case National Meat Association v Harris. The Supreme Court’s ruling reversed a lower court’s decision in the case, which involves a California law governing activities at slaughterhouses. The Court sided with the National Meat Association in its claim that the California law was preempted by the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) which regulates a broad range of activities at slaughterhouses to ensure the safety of meat and the humane handling of animals.
The National Meat Association is a non-profit organization representing meat packers and processors, equipment manufacturers, and suppliers located throughout the United States and other countries. The case was argued before the Supreme Court by Minneapolis-based Dorsey Partner Steven Wells.
