The Department of Homeland Security has announced that it will postpone implementation of the E-Verify requirement for federal contractors until at least May 21, 2009. As we explained in previous eUpdates the requirement, originally scheduled to take effect on January 19, already had been postponed once before. While the DHS continues to encourage voluntary use of E-Verify by employers as the best means for determining the employment eligibility of new hires, the government reportedly will be using this further postponement to reassess mandating its widespread use under the new federal contractor rule.
