Dorsey partner Steven C. Nelson discussed in The Minnesota Lawyer the challenge of managing a branch office in China. Dorsey has locations in both Hong Kong and Shanghai, and Nelson has managed the Hong Kong office since its inception in 1995.

Nelson said that a local presence in China has allowed Dorsey to handle a wide variety of issues specific to Asian markets. "As a firm, we are heavily involved in assisting Chinese and foreign companies in listing their shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which involves some very different expertise from our U.S.-based securities practice." Yet Nelson cautioned that the fast pace, variety and complexity of work in Asia are not for the faint of heart. "Not only are new Chinese laws and regulations being issued at a furious pace, but at a macroeconomic level the nature of capital that flows into and out of China has continued to change dramatically over the last few years."
