Dorsey partner Mark Jarboe discussed in the Minnesota Lawyer the firm's Indian law practice in Minnesota and nationwide. Describing the practice as increasingly complex and sophisticated, Jarboe recalled his first tribal project more than 20 years ago, when he helped negotiate the first tribal tax-exempt financing project in the nation.
Since the Indian gaming boom of the early 1990s, Jarboe says the practice has become more specialized, as tribes have hired in-house legal departments. For the Dorsey Indian Gaming group, the practice has also expanded in scope, with representation of approximately 70 tribes nationwide over the last 20 years. Jarboe said the opportunity to work with tribal clients has provided a great deal of professional satisfaction. "It's absolutely fascinating. It's finance and law, but also complex jurisdiction and culture."
