Walter helps life sciences companies build patent portfolios that support growth, financing, and exit strategies, and helps investors evaluate patent assets in acquisitions, financings, and other strategic transactions.
Walter advises life sciences and healthcare technology companies on patent prosecution, patent portfolio development, and intellectual property strategy. He helps emerging companies align their patent portfolios with business objectives, financing goals, commercialization plans, and potential exit opportunities. He also counsels investors, acquirers, and strategic partners on patent due diligence for acquisitions, investments, and other transactions involving IP-intensive businesses.
His clients operate across digital health, medical diagnostics, bioinformatics, ophthalmic devices, wound care, and ENT technologies, where strong patent protection can be a critical driver of company valuation, investment readiness, and competitive advantage.
Walter brings a perspective few patent attorneys can offer. He holds a medical degree, is a licensed physician, and was board-certified in internal medicine from 2000 to 2010. His clinical training enables him to quickly understand complex medical technologies, evaluate patent claims in the context of real-world healthcare applications, and identify strengths and vulnerabilities that may affect patent value, freedom to operate, or investment risk.
In addition to patent prosecution and portfolio counseling, Walter develops intellectual property strategies for inter partes review (IPR) proceedings, patent litigation, and other patent disputes. His experience includes matters involving surgical robotics, prosthetic devices, and pharmaceutical technologies, where he has applied his medical and biostatistical background to analyze highly technical issues.
Walter regularly conducts patent due diligence for investors and strategic buyers evaluating healthcare and technology companies. His experience includes assessing patent portfolios involving internet-connected glucometers and inhalers, accommodating intraocular lenses, and cloud-based genomics analysis platforms. He has also advised emerging companies on patent strategies that helped position them for successful acquisitions and other strategic opportunities.
