This map shows U.S. state franchise laws, broken out by type of laws. It was last published in February 2013 as part of a presentation to the Canadian Franchise Association Annual Legal Day in Toronto, Canada, on the topic of “Franchise Laws in the U.S., Trends for Canadian Franchisors”. We have been helping franchisors comply with these laws for over 30 years. We keep up to date with legal developments, including pending legislation and case law, in part by Gary Duvall’s membership on the IFA Legal-Legislative Committee.

On the map, in the 38 states with such laws there are five types of franchise laws described and color coded. These include states with laws governing franchise registration, notice filing, relationships between franchisor and franchisee, business opportunity laws that cover some franchisors, and other. However, these laws contain complex definitions and exemptions that are not described on the map, and change frequently, so viewers are encouraged to contact us for specific legal advice.
