Following three years of campaigning by shareholder activists, more than 60% of S&P 500 corporations have now adopted some form of majority-voting requirement for election of directors. States are also beginning to amend their corporation statutes to make it easier for corporations to opt out of the plurality-voting default rule and adopt majority voting or at least adopt a policy requiring directors to submit resignations if they do not receive a majority of votes cast in their favor.
