International law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP is pleased to announce that Sandra Edelman, a partner in the Firm’s Trademark, Copyright, Advertising and Brand Management Group and a member of the Firm’s Management Committee, was selected as the winner of the 2015 Ladas Memorial Award Professional Category for writing excellence on the subject of trademarks and related matters, for her article entitled Why Wait Three Years? Cancellation of Lanham Act Section 44(e) and 66(a) Registrations Based on Non-Use Prior to the Three-Year Statutory Period for Presumption of Abandonment.
Ms. Edelman has extensive experience in brand name clearance and trademark portfolio management, advertising claims review and counseling on advertising and promotional content in both traditional and social media. She acts as lead counsel in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings and ex parte appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and advises clients on offensive and defensive litigation strategy. Ms. Edelman has also been the mediator in more than 30 intellectual property cases.
“Sandy is a valuable member of the Firm’s Management Committee and she has helped us to grow all of our practice areas through her experience and leadership. In addition, Sandy has an incredibly successful practice and handles some of the most complex intellectual property matters,” noted Dorsey Managing Partner Ken Cutler. “She contributes not only as a practicing attorney, but as a thought leader and educator in her chosen specialty. We are proud of her and pleased she has been recognized as a 2015 Ladas Memorial Award winner.”
As this year’s Professional Category award winner, Ms. Edelman joins a small but distinguished group whose scholarship has contributed to the field of trademarks and enhanced the understanding of this discipline. The Ladas Memorial Award was established in memory of Stephen P. Ladas, distinguished practitioner and author. Funded by Ladas & Parry LLP, and administered by the International Trademark Association (INTA), this yearly award is presented in Student and Professional categories for a paper on trademark law or a matter that directly relates to or affects trademarks.
Ms. Edelman’s paper has also been published in The Trademark Reporter (TMR), INTA’s Law Journal. The Trademark Reporter (TMR) is the world’s only scholarly journal dedicated solely to trademark law and related topics. Six times a year, the TMR publishes works of high-quality legal scholarship by trademark practitioners and professionals, academic faculty and law students.
