The Robert K. Hickerson Public Service Award recognizes lifetime achievement for outstanding dedication and service in the State of Alaska in the provision of pro bono legal services and/or legal services to low income and/or indigent persons.
I am delighted to announce this year’s winner is Bob Bundy of Dorsey & Whitney. Bob has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to public service in Alaska and to the principle that all Alaskans are entitled to equal access to the justice system.
His pro bono work is lengthy, some of which include the Innocence Project which is a national litigation and public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent further injustice. The Innocence Project’s national directors wrote that Bob’s “efforts have been comprehensive and his success extraordinary; his advocacy has been outstanding… his efforts demonstrate a deep commitment to the principles of truth and fairness that lie at the heart of real criminal justice.”
As a former attorney of Alaska Legal Services Corporation, Bob made an impression on fellow coworkers. Former colleague attorney John Murtagh wrote that Bob has a deep concern for the provision of legal services to others and a careful consideration of how legal matters actually impact individuals on a day to day basis. This was highlighted by his “powerful desire to assist others to work in a village” during his tenure in Nome and other rural communities.
His loyalty to Alaskans and Alaska Legal Services Corporation lives on through his board service both in volunteering and financial giving. Bob’s accomplishments and generosity are too many and significant to name them all here. Please join me in congratulating and thanking Bob Bundy on his extraordinary service and commitment to Alaskans!
