Bankers vs. Lawyers Cricket Match in Mumbai Organised by Jamie Benson of Dorsey & Whitney Raises Money for the Red Cross

The lawyers’ team won the second edition of the Dorsey & Whitney Capital Markets Cup in Mumbai on Saturday, April 9 by 41 runs. Representatives from Dorsey & Whitney and some of India’s best known law firms and investment banks played at the Parsee Gymkhana, Mumbai, India.

The bankers' team included representatives from Citigroup Global Markets, Enam Securities, ICICI Securities, JM Financial, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Nomura, Religare Capital Markets and UBS.

Jamie Benson, Special Counsel, Dorsey & Whitney organised the match. Jamie captained the lawyers’ team, which also had representatives from Amarchand Mangaldas, Khaitan & Co., Luthra & Luthra, Nishith Desai Associates, Crawford Bayley, and S&R Associates.

Dorsey & Whitney sponsored the Capitals Market Cup, which is expected to raise approximately Rs. 300,000 for the Red Cross. Dorsey & Whitney donated Rs. 3,500 per wicket and Rs. 7,000 per six hit. Crawford Bayley also donated the same amount. Donations are also being accepted from individuals.

“It was a much closer game this time. The bankers were on track to reel in our score at the half-way point but we managed to close it out quite comfortably in the end. I think everyone really enjoyed the day and it was all for a good cause,” said Jamie Benson.



The match was 25 overs per side with all batsman reaching 50 having to retire. The lawyers batted first and scored a huge total of 269 runs for 7 wickets in 25 overs. Vijay Parthasarathi of Amarchand Mangaldas led the way for the lawyers with 50 retired, including one six. Jamie Benson, the lawyers’ captain, scored 49 off only 23 balls, including two towering sixes. Sandip Bhagat, partner at S&R Associates, played magnificently for 44 retired. Mayuresh Patwardhan of Religare Capital Markets took two wickets, including taking a sharp catch off his own bowling to dismiss the dangerous Rabindra Jhunjhunwala of Khaitan & Co. Vishal Gahlaut of Morgan Stanley also picked up two wickets.

The bankers scored 228 for 6 wickets in 25 overs. Sachin Wagle of Morgan Stanley, the captain of the bankers’ XI, scored a classy 54 runs retired, including one six, and Srinath R of Morgan Stanley played very well for 50 retired, including one six. Other highlights of the bankers’ innings included Neelabh Sanyal of Enam Securities hitting a massive six that landed on the top of the pavilion and Johnny Barnett of ICICI Securities hitting a few lusty blows at the end of the innings. Subhayu Sen of Khaitan & Co. dismissed both opening batsman. Anil Choudhary of Nishith Desai Associates was involved in running out two of the batsman in the bankers’ team, including the luckless Vivek Shah of JP Morgan, who was run out without facing a ball following Anil’s direct hit.

The Chairman of Bombay City Red Cross, Mr. Arjun Bulchandani, and the Vice Chairperson of Bombay City Red Cross, Dr. C. J. Batliwalla, presented the Capital Markets Cup trophy to the winning captain, Jamie Benson of Dorsey & Whitney.
