Jeffrey Cadwell helps companies, creatives, and innovators select, protect, and commercialize their brands and creative works through trademark and copyright strategies that turn intellectual property into lasting business value.
Jeff brings that commitment to every client engagement — from global trademark clearance and portfolio management to copyright counseling, licensing, and enforcement across the music, life sciences, video game, and entertainment industries. Based in Minneapolis, Jeff leads the Firm's Minneapolis trademark practice group and co-leads Dorsey & Whitney's Creative Industries group.
Jeff advises artists, labels, and entertainment companies on brand and content strategy, negotiating production, licensing, and sponsorship agreements that protect rights holders and move deals forward. In the life sciences space, he leads clearance and branding projects for new pipeline drugs, helping clients navigate complex regulatory and global trademark landscapes. His digital IP practice covers artificial intelligence, domain name strategy, Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) proceedings, cyberpiracy, Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) enforcement, and anti-counterfeiting programs.
In the video game sector, Jeff has counseled clients on matters ranging from the sale of user-created in-game content to fair use questions involving artificial intelligence and third-party materials. He has co-edited the Dorsey Legal Arcade, a video game law newsletter, and he contributes regularly to the Firm's IP blog, TheTMCA.com.
Jeff is recognized in the 2026 World Trademark Review (WTR) as a leading practitioner, with reviewers citing his "clear and timely communication," "proactive approach in securing and protecting trademarks in various markets," and strength in licensing, sponsorship, and entertainment agreements. He was also named Trademark Prosecutor of the Year (Midwest) at the 2026 Managing IP Americas Awards. The Lexology Index: IP 2026 recognized him as "IP – Copyright (Highly Recommended)" for his leadership in copyright counseling, content strategy, and digital rights management. He speaks frequently on trademark, copyright, and digital IP issues at organizations across North America, including the International Trademark Association (INTA) and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC).
Jeff is a member of INTA's Copyright Committee, and has served on the Board of Trustees of the Copyright Society of the USA, where he co-chaired the Midwest Chapter from 2023 to 2025, and for which he currently co-chairs the mentorship program.
