International law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP announced today that Richard H. Silberberg, a partner in the Firm’s New York office, has been named President of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, the nation’s leading professional organization of commercial arbitrators.

The College of Commercial Arbitrators, established in 2001, consists of approximately 250 peer-selected commercial arbitrators situated in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia, and serving as neutrals on arbitration tribunals throughout the world.  Admission to the College signifies that an arbitrator possesses the professional training, experience and judgment to handle the most complex and sophisticated commercial arbitration matters.

The College of Commercial Arbitrators celebrates and advocates excellence in the field of commercial arbitration, both in the United States and internationally.  The College promotes the highest standards of arbitrator ethics and conduct, best practices in commercial arbitration, peer training and development, and diversity within the profession of alternative dispute resolution.

“At a time that arbitration is playing an ever-increasing role in the resolution of commercial disputes, it is imperative that commercial arbitrators who are entrusted to hear and adjudicate these cases be pre-eminent in their fields and demonstrate the highest standards of judgment, integrity and moral character,” Mr. Silberberg said.  “I am honored to be in a position to build upon the work of my predecessors and to collaborate with our Fellows in promoting best practices in commercial arbitration and diversity in our profession.”

The College is widely-known for its Protocols for Expeditious, Cost-Effective Commercial Arbitration, published in 2010 and widely used by arbitration tribunals to achieve the costs savings and efficiencies which are the hallmark of the commercial arbitration process, and for its Guide to Best Practices in Commercial Arbitration, now in its 4th edition.

A Dorsey partner since 1988, Mr. Silberberg leads trial teams in domestic and international litigation, arbitration and administrative proceedings.  His clients include renowned manufacturing, health care, professional services and technology companies.  Mr. Silberberg has also served in a number of firm leadership positions at Dorsey.  He most recently completed two terms as Chair of Dorsey’s Policy Committee, is currently Co-Chair of Dorsey's International Arbitration & Litigation and Class Action Litigation Groups, and previously served as Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's Global Litigation, Intellectual Property and Regulatory practices, as a member of its Management Committee, and as head of its New York office.

An active commercial arbitrator and mediator, Mr. Silberberg is a member of the Board of Directors (and Executive Committee) of the New York International Arbitration Center, the Executive Committee of Dispute Resolution Section of the New York State Bar Association, and a member of various dispute resolution organizations and tribunals around the world, including the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; the London Court of International Arbitration; the Large Complex Case, International and Master Mediation Panels of the American Arbitration Association and International Centre for Dispute Resolution; the Cross-Border and Franchise Panels of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution; and various ad hoc and court-annexed arbitration panels.

“Rich is a superb lawyer who is also dedicated to providing leadership to the profession and to the ADR community, as demonstrated by his active role in numerous prominent organizations, including the College of Commercial Arbitrators,” said Dorsey Managing Partner Ken Cutler. “We know that Rich will bring great energy and judgment to the important work of the College.”
