Tim Worrall is a Partner in the Dorsey patent group. Tim has a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of the South and a Ph.D. in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he specialized in chip based diagnostics and biological mass spectrometry. After working as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, he received his J.D. from The University of California School of Law (Boalt Hall), where he earned a certificate in intellectual property and was an editor of the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.
Tim provides IP legal services to a broad range of clients in California, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, and across the mid-west. In particular, Tim works closely with a number of pharmaceutical, life science, plant science, materials science, and energy clients to develop and manage patent portfolios. Tim also works with clients to identify, monitor and assess the infringement risks of third-party patents, and assists clients in preparing both offensive and defensive patent portfolios with an emphasis on drafting patent applications that will be utilized in licensing and in litigation efforts.
Tim's practice includes counseling on many aspects of IP, including IP portfolio development and management, IP commercialization, and due diligence relating to client sales and acquisitions. In the patent field, Tim helps his clients analyze the risks associated with the introduction of new products, including analyzing infringement, validity, and freedom to practice issues, and preparing related opinions. Tim also helps clients identify innovation by designing and implementing invention disclosure systems, and helps his clients protect those inventions by preparing and prosecuting patent applications both at the United States Patent and Trademark Office and internationally.
Tim also works closely with corporate and licensing attorneys. Tim's IP diligence work includes assessment of the strength and weakness of patent portfolios, evaluation of freedom to operate issues and strategic recommendations for maximizing value of developing patent portfolios.
