Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is LegalMine™?
Industry studies demonstrate that the cost of document review comprises 50% - 70% of litigation costs. In response to these statistics, Dorsey has developed LegalMine™, a state-of-the-art document review service, housed in Dorsey’s own headquarters office. LegalMine™ is specially designed to effectively manage litigation costs by culling and limiting the number of documents substantively reviewed, keeping the process efficient and costs predictable.
- What is “First Pass Document Review”?
First pass document review segregates responsive/relevant documents from the non-responsive/irrelevant or privileged documents. Other flags include: confidential, key or “hot” document, redaction, and further review. Documents deemed responsive or privileged are subject to further legal issue analysis.
- Why LegalMine™?
Dorsey conducted significant research to fully understand our clients’ needs. Old linear review systems (page-by-page review) can limit review rates, increasing costs. At the same time, clients were concerned about security and oversight with fully outsourced or offshore vendors. LegalMine™ is a Dorsey-managed document review on-site in our offices, where clients and the legal team can immediately interact with and oversee the work of the review team.
The dedicated LegalMine™ team has implemented quality control and efficiency mechanisms to significantly increase the competitive advantage for clients. Using a combination of state-of-the art concept mapping technology, dedicated review attorney staff, an in-house facility, and standardized quality control and feedback processes.
- Where is LegalMine™ located and how will my documents get there?
LegalMine™ is located in Dorsey & Whitney’s flagship Minneapolis office. The facility is a secure, key-card accessible area with dedicated review workstations. The LegalMine Manager oversees day-to-day operations in the facility, working with the attorneys, litigation support staff, paralegals, and clients to manage and communicate status of the review.
Document processing is conducted by Dorsey’s preferred technology provider. Data can be securely transmitted electronically or shipped directly by the client to LegalMine™ for processing.
- Why Attenex software?
LegalMine™ professionals have worked with a variety of review platforms, including many of the industry-leading providers. Attenex utilizes proprietary algorithms that organize similar documents together – much like hard copy documents might be organized into issue kits. Attenex technology also ensures greater consistency through implementation of techniques, such as email thread suppression, allowing the review team to look at a single instance of an email rather than numerous variations on the same email. This also helps to guard against inadvertent production of privileged information. The review team is quickly able to hone in on the most likely to be relevant documents in their review batch. Their increased review rates result in cost savings for our clients.
Dorsey continues to monitor the available technology in the industry to ensure that we continue to utilize the appropriate review platforms. While we prefer use of this state-of-the-art program, LegalMine™ can review documents in other platforms if the client prefers.
- How is the pricing predictable if I don’t know how many documents I have?
Once documents have been culled and uploaded, the document population is known. LegalMine™ charges a fixed cost for the review based on this information, leading to predictable and managed litigation costs. In some cases, documents are sent in “rolling” uploads. As each custodian’s data is compiled, the overall cost for review of that custodian’s documents is billed.
Dorsey is unaware of any other law firms currently offering a per document or per-page pricing model for document review. We continue to monitor industry standards and internal document review project metrics to ensure our price remains competitive.
