Sarah Andrews Herman is a partner and head of the Dorsey Fargo office. Sarah subscribes to one fundamental principle: “Clients come to us at a critical moment, at a turning point. The right solution can change their lives.” That conviction informs Sarah’s entire practice, as she acts as lead counsel in numerous commercial cases and in product liability and employment lawsuits and arbitrations, while also serving as head of our firm’s Fargo office.
Focused on civil and commercial litigation, and concentrating in employment and labor law, transportation law, and product liability, medical products defense, and health care cases, Sarah assists a range of corporate clients in North Dakota with complex regulatory obligations under OFCCP, OSHA, NLRB, and FLSA rules, and more.
A specialist in litigation, Sarah nevertheless believes that thorough preparation and a review of opportunities to settle disputes is at the heart of a successful practice. She sees herself as a problem-solver. “I joined Dorsey in 1994,” she points out, “because the firm had enormous resources—the best in the region. Not only could I serve clients better; but I enjoyed my practice more.”
Through preparation and case analysis she has obtained dismissals of numerous claims before extensive discovery was necessary. Sarah has also had great success in obtaining summary judgments and in handling trials, arbitrations, mediations, charges, and compliance audits, and she provides continuing consultation for clients to help them limit the risk of litigation or arbitration.
Sarah has developed a deep understanding of complex workplace claims, especially in cases of workplace sexual harassment. A trainer on harassment issues for universities, state government, the North Dakota judiciary and attorneys, and other business entities, she is widely respected for her presentations on employment matters and has published on federal regulations affecting the corporate workplace.
Past President of the North Dakota State Bar Association and named one of the Best Lawyers in America for twelve years, Sarah Herman has been recognized as an outstanding attorney and leader during her distinguished career. She has served as State Chair of the Eighth Circuit Committee on Gender Fairness, and as Co-Chair of Committee to Investigate Gender Fairness in North Dakota Courts. Sarah is the only lawyer in North Dakota to receive a Chamber USA "Star Ranking."
