Brad Hattenbach is Of Counsel in the Denver office of Dorsey's Intellectual Property practice group. Brad is a licensed patent attorney and his practice is primarily focused on helping clients develop, acquire, and maintain patent and other intellectual property rights in a wide range of technologies. Brad has represented a variety of clients from technology startups to large multinational corporations. For both emerging and developed companies, this process involves ongoing strategic planning, management, and resource allocation to develop assets that will both protect the technology and provide value to the client.
Brad has over 12 years of experience in preparing and prosecuting national and international patent applications, managing international patent portfolios, preparing and prosecuting trademark applications, and negotiating technology licensing agreements. As part of the intellectual property portfolio development and management process, Brad helps clients by providing patentability, product clearance, validity, and infringement opinions. He also assists clients in litigation of intellectual property related matters, including patent, trademark, and copyright infringement in U.S. federal courts.
Brad has experience with a broad range of technologies including the following: medical devices, green-tech/clean-tech including energy efficient building materials, software and network systems, the Internet and business methods, telecommunications systems (including wireless protocols), cable and satellite broadcasting systems, geospatial information systems, solid state nanotechnology, radio frequency identification (RFID), chip bumping and bonding, mechanical and electro-mechanical devices (including disk drives), microwavable food product packaging, water purification systems, and consumer products.
Brad’s practice has evolved to focus primarily in the areas of medical devices/equipment and clean-tech. With respect to medical devices and equipment, Brad has specific experience in preparing patent applications and/or providing opinions concerning
- cardiology, including ablation devices, heart valves, perfusion devices, cardiac mapping, stents, leads, and delivery tools, prosthetic valve and vascular testing devices;
- surgical devices, including laparoscopic, thoracic, cardiac, and prostate vascular and aneurysm occlusion devices; access devices, electrosurgical devices, RF surgical devices, laser wound closure devices and related surgical methods;
- orthopedics, including spinal implants and paralytic rehabilitation devices;
- ophthalmologic devices including intraocular and intracorneal lenses, punctal plugs, glaucoma shunts, and related surgical methods; and
- gynecological devices including temporary and permanent birth control, IUDs, and victim test kits.
Brad’s medical device experience also includes work with diagnostic software systems; MRI image processing; medical fluid pathway connectors and valves; drug dispensing and monitoring devices; dental tools and dental implants; oral and nasal health products; and weight loss and maintenance devices.
With respect to the clean technology industry, Brad has worked with clients to protect technologies including energy efficient windows, spandrels, panels, and other building materials; structurally integrated building panel systems; wind turbines; solar panels and solar cells; solar thermal systems; solar daylighting systems; energy storage systems; heat exchange devices; heating cables; water purification systems; and alternative transportation systems.
