Dorsey & Whitney’s Asia-Pacific Practice Group projects the firm’s broad capabilities into the Asia-Pacific Region.  Combining the skills and experience of the lawyers based in our offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai as well as attorneys throughout the Firm with practices connecting to the Asia Pacific region, the group provides general corporate and dispute-resolution services to American and European clients operating in Asia, and to Asian clients throughout the world.  Areas of special emphasis include the structuring of foreign investments, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, technology transfer, corporate restructuring and distressed-asset transactions throughout the region.

The Asian economic environment is undoubtedly the most dynamic in the world.  However, doing business in the region involves extraordinary complexities and uncertainties for most foreign companies.  Our lawyers bring decades of international experience, as well as the requisite cultural and linguistic skills, to bear in creating legal and business solutions that work for small and medium-sized clients as well as large multinationals.

Our India capital markets practitioners were among the first international lawyers  to recognise the opportunities and possibilities afforded by the India capital markets boom and Dorsey has become a key player in the Indian market.  We work with major investment banks and Indian companies on a range of international securities issues (PDF). We offer our clients in India access to a range of venture capitalists and business contacts as well as commercially focused advice on transactions involving the Indian sub continent and the UK.

Our Asia-based lawyers include natives of mainland China as well as natives of the U.S., Australia and other locations who are trained in the legal systems of those countries.  We are admitted to full practice in Hong Kong and advise on international transactions in India and throughout the region.  Although we are not admitted to practice before the courts in mainland China, we are licensed as foreign lawyers and permitted to provide a wide range of legal services there.  We have a special counsel relationship with a PRC firm, as well as a network of relationships with other excellent local law firms, which enables us to look after the legal interests of our clients throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Recognitions that Dorsey has received include being selected as a Recommended Firm for Dispute Resolution in China by The Legal 500 and being listed in The Asian Lawyer’s 2014 “Asia 50 Global Players: International Firms with Largest Asia-Pacific Presence."
