The mission of the Minnesota Black Women Lawyers Network is to enhance the profile of black women lawyers, providing networking and mentoring opportunities and encouraging black women lawyers. In 1921, Lena O. Smith was the first black woman admitted to practice law in Minnesota. Lena worked in partnership with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to fight segregation and inequality. Today, there are fewer than 10,000 black women lawyers in the country and fewer than 120 black women lawyers in Minnesota.
